Sacred Space for your Practice

Why Sacred Space for yourself matters?

As I mentioned in my last blog post, in our busy, always-on world, it is important to carve out sacred moments for yourself. These can be big or small, what is important is building up the habit of prioritising yourself and your needs.

One of my favourite ways of carving out space for myself is doing some meditation and manifestation work. I like to start the day with a cup of herbal tea or cacao (more to come on this) and grab my journal and some oracle cards.

I’ll sit down in front of my altar or set up a sacred space for myself, taking my time to really drop into the space. I’ll then use my breath to quieten my mind. Next, I’ll spend a few moments journalling, noting the cycle phase I am in the, the moon phase, recording how I am feeling and what I am grateful. Depending on what time of the year or moon phase it is, I might add a further manifestation ritual to let go of any limiting beliefs and to bring up in my minds eye what I’m calling into my life. Et voila!

I didn’t start out like this by the way. I went to different circles, joined online meditation groups and slowly started to add a short meditation practice to some mornings in the week. Just like any other practice or skill, meditation and your self-care practice is a habit that is built up over time.

Below are some tips on getting started with your meditation practice and ideas on creating a sacred space for yourself.

Getting Started with Meditation & Manifestation

All you need for meditation is yourself. You can do it anytime and any place - all it involves is simply listening to your breath or focusing on single action/focus point.

Here are my top tips for getting started with meditation and manifestation:

  • Start Small - simply focus on 3 deep inhales and exhales and then build from there

  • Keep it Short - begin with 1 minute and then build that to 3mins, 5mins, 10mins etc

  • Keep it Simple - focus on one single thing. This could be your breath, perhaps counting to a certain number, repeating a bija sound or mantra or maybe staring at a flame (be mindful of your eyes so soften your gaze when you do this).

  • Sign up for a circle or meditation If you can, try to keep yourself accountable by joining a meditation class or in-person or online circle (like my Monthly New Moon Circle) as they tend to be a LOT more powerful than watching them back.

Creating a Sacred Space for yourself

To make your space extra sacred set up a little altar for yourself. It doesn't have to be anything huge, simply a window sill or a little space on your desk is perfect. Over time you can allow this to grow whee you have a much more elaborate altar for your longer circles and ceremonies.

Some ideas for creating your Sacred Space:

  • Sage or incense (note: don't light this until you have started your session or just before, please be mindful if using blankets around a lit object)

  • Crystals

  • Any items with sentimental value (eg. a gift from a loved one, an heirloom, a piece of jewellery etc.)

  • Fairy lights or candles (note: don't light this until you have started your session or just before, please be mindful if using blankets around an open flame)

Other ideas to expand your altar and sacred space:

  • Any oracle cards or images of Goddesses/Deities that resonate with you

  • Items to identify the 4 Cardinal Directions - Earth/Wind/Fire/Water

    • eg: a piece of bark/a feather/a candle/a shell or water from a stream/the sea.

  • Items you have picked up from nature or sacred spaces (please do be mindful of destroying natural areas though)

  • A cloth or throw/linen that acts as a base for the altar space

  • Flowers to make a mandala

  • Anything else that feels sacred to you!
